The following photo shows a quite rare and controversial pro-American pattern example of an original circa 1898 liberation of Puerto Rico from Spain period made flag. Contrary to the now common and so called single large star Cuban flag based model, this liberation type Puerto Rico flag example is actually based on the American flag, where the multiple stars on blue symbolize the main population areas around the island.
The origins of the US Commonwealth of Puerto Rico's flag are uncertain, an official version finaly having been adopted as late as 1952. The design of the flag is said to pre-date the 1898 American liberation of the island from Spain. One claim dates the Puerto Rico flag to 22 December 1895, this is per the Puerto Rican Pro-Independence members of the Cuban Revolutionary Party in their New York City meeting minutes which are said to describe the flag as "...the same as the cuban, but the color stripes are inverted." These 1895 meeting minutes are also said to define the flags symbolism as red for blood, white for the expected soon to be liberation victory, blue for the sky and surrounding sea waters, and a white star for the island itself. Other circa liberation of the island versions of Puerto Rico flag do exist, but are much lesser known , especially if their design shows any pro-American leaning.
